Chartwell House, The Home of Winston Churchill
An experiment with my Canon M6 in a crowded house (Believe it or not) There were a lot of people in there so I had to pick my moment in order to get clean shots not dominated by people standing around!! So lots of tight shots, handheld which can be really difficult indoors with very low light and an aperture very often at F1.4.
Just wanted to see what I could get with my mirrorless camera in a difficult situation, where normally, I'd be swinging an action cam around on a pole!!

In this video, I wandered around the well known market in Miami, using the Osmo Action 4 in all kinds of lighting conditions. I went from very bright full sun, to very low lighting inside shops. Some of the lighting was so low that it had to be rescued in post, because I limited the ISO in order to minimise noise. Since the Action gives 10 bit footage, you do have a little more leeway to play a...

    Hi Ian! I know it's been a while since you posted the video, I love your energy. Do you think that with a higher MB/s per second SD memory the video quality could improve? I've heard that was the case with some Panasonic handycams. Best regards, I really liked the video, your voice, the things you highlighted, the ducks, the dogs, everything very nice ^_^ 💖.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig 2 дня назад

      Hi. I guess a higher bitrate would be nice. It might improve the picture, but for me, it does what it needs to fairly well. It’s not the sharpest but a great tool to learn video basics and allow you to just concentrate on video making without fussing over too many settings. Slow the shutter down and it really starts to look more ‘film’ like and actually, because it lacks that razor sharpness of DSLR’s, it can be really nice to watch on large screens. You don’t get distracted by the often ‘brittle’ quality of DSLR footage. More often than not, I’m softening footage from my mirrorless cameras up!

      @@iancraig Thanks Ian! I like these "keep it simple" or minimalist concepts and the idea of focusing on what we are looking at. You make good points :) It may sound silly but I feel like it would make me very happy to record day to day stuff with this little camera haha. I may end up buying it, I was also thinking about the Panasonic “HC-WXF991K”.

      It’s not so much the camera, but the shape and direction of your video that is important. What I like about these camcorders is the speed and ease that they allow you to capture footage. But for really good video, really, it’s the assembly of the clips that count for more. I’ve just spent three weeks in Florida with just the Action 4. I came home with 4 full sd cards of footage. I made 20 detailed videos of our time there and then cut the best of each video into one film of 25 minutes. That is the one that my family watch. Three weeks of footage with 4 full cards to make a 25 minute video! No one cares what the camera was, but as long as you use the best footage and shape your video to tell a story, people are hooked!

      @@iancraig Excellent and totally true, at the end of the day the only thing people remember is what they felt, if you connected with your audience they will never forget if you touched something in them.... If you're a bit of a nerd about these things you get obsessed with the technical details and in the end nobody cares about that hahahah. There are so many things that can distract you, it's important to get back to the basics, to combine shots to make sense, to make meaning. I want to get back to what's important and stop messing around. Thank you for taking the time to answer, you have made me think, I appreciate it very much. • @iancraig

      Hi Jon. I did this video using a very low contrast picture profile. Not Cinetone, but even less contrast so that I could get a picture in really dark areas and boost the contrast in post just to an amount that didn’t black out dark areas. I was trying to make it look more like a film, rather than a vlog. I was using F1.4 a lot of the time so depth of field was narrow. It’s called Filmkit flat wide. You can load the same profile onto the m50. It’s closer to log footage than Cinetone. Really flat and low sharpness. I also used 30fps and a very slow shutter …. 1/40th, so the image softened up. Lots happening on the Action cam front. Action 5, Ace Pro 2 and Hero 13. Spoilt for choice. I’m going to bide my time I think. I like the Action 4 a lot although I sometimes find its footage a bit too sharp and in yer face, but then, that’s action cams for you I guess.

      Hi Sonny. Yes, it’s up the road from where I live. I only show a fraction of what’s there in this video. What I found strange is how different it looks on video compared to being there. It looks so Victorian on screen to me. He was a busy fella. His water colours are now worth a fortune. He collected butterflies. Wrote books and won an award, let alone being Prime Minister during the war. I saw his funeral train when I was a kid. His body was transported by train to London. Just back from Florida. Beautiful place and lovely people. Had a ball. I can’t believe how the manatee numbers have grown since I was last there. Loads of cardinals around us as well. Loved Key West. What a place, with butterfly house and Harry Truman’s holiday White House. Fox News was a scream …. Trump all over the place. We had Tropical Storm Debby and never seen rain like it. Want to go back now.

  • @iancraig

    A crowded house with very low light. I wanted to try an experiment with my Canon M6 just to see what I could capture without getting too many people in shot. So I wandered around grabbing shots where I could; often at F1.4 so depth of field was tiny and light was so poor. Then in post, snatched the brief seconds where people weren’t in front of my lens, other than my wife. So hopefully, it gives the impression that we went around the place leisurely and took our time. In reality, it was hustle and bustle! I couldn’t talk. People around would say, ‘Pardon?’ ; )

    Wow! So cool seeing your reaction to the storm. We got the remnants of Debby up here in North Carolina just after that. I think that "cold wind" you felt was a downburst. That's the wind coming from high up in the storm and slamming in to the ground and going out in each direction. If there's a strong thunderstorm coming in, you usually know about it from that (and of course the thunder). It's my favorite part, especially if it's been hot that day! I guess that can happen with a hurricane as well.

    • @iancraig

      Thanks Mark. That cold wind was really spooky. We were baking hot and it suddenly felt like a cemetery and I wasn’t kidding …. The hairs on my arms stood up. It’s the weirdest feeling. The full blast of wind hadn’t arrived; just the rain. We were concerned about the sea coming up because we were staying right on it. Luckily, the storm skirted around us but the flooding that we saw on Fox was terrible. Then we felt lucky!

But I'll never forget one day when a storm came in and we got one of those cold winds. Best feeling ever! Haha. Glad to hear the storm missed you. We got TONS of rain here, but at least I live in the foothills and the rain drains faster in to the creeks. But, it all flows to the coast. And, those at the coast usually get a LOT of flooding. Even if we don't get a direct hit. I love Fall in North Carolina, but the tropical storms that come through can cause some havoc.

    Good show jolly good show! Only place that talks about shutter and iris. ax53 so you must pick one setting coz all others will auto...right? Does it help at all to set all settings anyway...and influence camera to go your way some. Waste of time i. guess. Seems as you adjust settings in and out of focus you see the result on the screen as it happens. True? That would help right? but again, waste of time if it all goes to one setting. Seems a very hard way to get a sharp image and Im having a hard time now. 4K needs a 30 or 60 speed, is it, card or more as well as 10 U marks. using a 30 card now and hard getting sharp images. Thanks a billion!

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig 14 дней назад

      Yes, you can only adjust one thing and the other compensates in auto. So if you adjust for shallow depth of field by opening the aperture, the shutter adjusts itself to a higher speed. Put on an ND and then the shutter adjusts to a lower speed. The aperture and shutter work in conjunction with each other in an automatic way. The screen does show exactly what’s happening so focus is easily seen there. It seems awkward at first but actually, you would have to do the same manually in other cameras. By ‘sharp images’ I hope you don’t mean still images? It is better in video to watch the moving image since really, these are movie cameras rather than photo cameras and a slight lack of razor edges can help a lot with the appearance of movement. A very sharp edge can look awful in video. As far as cards go, these cameras don’t use a really high bit rate. So they are less fussy about card speed. Try using the shutter nice and low and allow the aperture to do whatever. You will see nice motion blur and have footage that looks more like ‘film’ rather than sharp, contrasty ‘still like’ images that you can get from DSLRs.

Since the Action gives 10 bit footage, you do have a little more leeway to play around with files in post in order to fix them.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig 25 дней назад

      I think that there are two versions. One without battery and one with. The version with the battery will work but it’s a rather cumbersome setup. It might be better to look at more traditional ‘on camera’ mics. They give good sound, have a good shockmount system and aren’t so big.

      Yes, it works really well. You can put an extension onto the lead to make it longer and separate the two mics by making a ‘T’ shape. Then the mics are about 6 feet or so apart. I think one of the best uses for it.

      We had a brilliant time Andre. The heat knocked us for six at first. We’re just not used to it. Actually, I got some funny shots of us in the car, using it as a cooling area and the three of us look cooked. We went down to Key West to Truman’s Little White House and I said to the guy running a tour that I can’t imagine how people could live there given the suits that they wore and the heat. (Let alone the cowboys in the 19th century. He said, they normally kept one working set of clothes and in Truman’s case, they hung the clothes in an open closet so air could move through and stop mildew forming and they were just left to dry! Yuk. I honestly don’t know how they did it. I met a guy from Texas who said it was hotter there, but not as humid, much dryer. How on earth did cowboys wear leather gear and work outdoors in it there? I also saw photos of Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp, plus others in really heavy clothes. Madness!!!

    How to capture ambient sound using this microphone? Something like at the airport.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig Месяц назад

      I don’t think it’s any different to other sounds except I think I might use a dynamic mic since the sounds being recorded would be so loud if you include jet engines. General airport sounds would be best in stereo or surround and the internal mics would capture it ok.

      @@iancraig sorry, i used wrong preposition. Should have used 'in'. I was thinking of recording the announcement and interactions of people (walking/talking/wheel noises from suitcases) from multiple angles. Sort of 'spatial audio'. Would 4ch be the best option?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig Месяц назад

      Oh ok. 4 channel would be great, only if you play back on a 4 channel system. Stereo is way more common, so if you record spatial sound and mix down to stereo, that will give you a nice wide sound. I tend to stick with pure stereo.

I am really interested in the HDR-CX450 because of the possibility of the external microphone, however I am also interested in using the internal microphone mainly, but I saw a video where they said that the sound quality of the internal microphone was horrible. I have not been able to find another reference on the internet that evaluated the quality of the internal microphone of the HDR-CX450, but I did find that of the HDR-CX405. Do you consider that there are differences in audio quality between these two models with respect to the internal microphone?

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig Месяц назад

      I’m not familiar with that particular interface but it might be useful to test each separately. Make sure you are getting audio from the output of the interface and plug a mic directly into the Zoom to make sure that it is accepting audio. If they both work individually, maybe check phantom power switches on both. Turn off on the Zoom but on, on the interface. I’m guessing that you want to use more than two mics? If not, I would go directly into the camera myself. That will take two on left and right channels. The preamp on the Zoom is quite nice.

      I’m thinking about it, but the size of some of the things out there is terrifying. Went to a place in Islamorada today, feeding tarpon by hand. Five to six feet long and jumping out of the water to take the fish that I held and half my arm with it! I’ve got three weeks here to think about it, but some of the really big things, I’m not keen on getting stuck with on the end of a rod. A man was attacked by a bull shark today in Key West. Nearly took his leg off!
